2013 will have an emergence of Periodical cicadas in much of Piedmont Region of the Commonwealth. Also know as 17-Year Cicadas and 17 Year locusts, these critters will be making a bunch of noise in May and June as well as damaging small trees. Of particular concern is newly set fruit trees, as important branches may get damaged and influence the shape of the tree in later years. Older trees seem to be able to withstand a fair amount of damage. For a fact sheet, see: Periodical CicadaAt our sponsored Lawn Care Clinic in October 2007, Scott Baker of the Virginia Cooperative Extension provided this helpful lawn care calendar: Lawn Care Calendar (click to download PDF file).
